I recently received a review sample of the Altec Lansing inMotion Air wireless speaker. This speaker – apart from a special and very nice design – can play music/sound from you computer eighter by a enclosed wireless adapter (300 feet – approx 90 meters) or by Bluetooth equipment like mobile-phones, laptops, tablets etc (30 feet – approx 9 meters). This speaker gets powered by an integrated battery or by a power cord. The battery should according to Altec Lansing last 7 hours.
As mentioned above – this speaker looks great, it is covered in a kind of rubber surface making it easy to carry, and the build is excellent. I own a similar speaker from Creative called Creative D100 and it really can’t compare to the Altec Lansing speaker in any way (D100 is a bit cheaper and perhaps made for another segment, but nevertheless). Where Creative is plastic in both build and sound, Altec Lansing delivers a speaker that gives the quality look and feel.
All though the Altec Lansing speaker has a great build (the look is off course a bit subjective) – the power of this speaker is it’s sound! The sound is VERY pleasant with a balanced treble / bass. I could recommend this speaker to any kind of music if you are planning to play the music at “normal” volume levels. It will not fill a large room with background noise – but this (I think) was never the plan eighter. The sound is – to describe is as best I can – soothing to the ears, giving just enough treble to make the sound a clear vocal, just enough bass to give you the how-on-earth-can-this-little-box-give-this deep-bass-feeling, and the combination of all is just pleasant!
The bluetooth pairing with both laptop and iphone is very easy. You push down the “source/pair” button until the “B/T Status” LED begins to alternate red/blue. You switch on bluetooth on you mobile phone / laptop and it should discover the speaker as “inMotion Air” – enable it and listen to your favorite music!
I use this speaker as a laptop computer speaker replacement and as an external iPhone speaker. In both cases this speaker is great! I’m a bit picky when it comes to speakers, and I have owned many for my computer (computer speakers), and I must say – I have found a new favorite!
If you are looking for a mobile wireless speaker which also gives you great sound, you should check up this speaker from Altec Lansing. You can find this speaker online now (May 2011) for about $200.
If I should give the classical pros and cons for this speaker, I would give build and sound both pro, and as con I would say nothing. The only sad thing about this speaker is that I will have to return my review sample to Altec Lansing, but perhaps in the future I will buy my own – I really can’t see (now) what speakers will nudge this off its throne
